Virtual World vs Reality

By Intan Rabiatul Natasha

This week, Mr Jamali showed us the documentary about the Second life and its user's life; in and outside the virtual world. What I can see here , it is true that Second Life is not a game. It is a virtual 3D world where people can do whatever they wanted to. They can even make money inside the virtual world as well.

Second Life are one of those examples where we can see people get too intense being the character they tried to convey in the 3D world. When everything getting too intense, they might disconnect with the real world and having difficulties in managing their own identity in real life.

In Second Life, its users can control their character's doing, they can create things such as table, house and even clothes and start a business because there is standardised currency in the virtual world itself. There's no limit at all except one which I will go back at it later on.

The Second Life that has been established since 2003 promising the user its 3D medium of life for them to feel more real and into the virtual world that they joined into. Unlike other social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter where users interacts with each other by replying to each other's posts and image that has been shared. In SL the character or avatar of each user are actually doing the exact thing the user wants. Each and every action done by the avatar are based on what the users are feeling or thinking. Best be said, that they actually still doing whatever they wanted to but in the different dimensions and all they need is  just internet connection and computer. The users in SL basically do whatever they wanted to do in real life in the SL because of many factors. For example, the users hanging out with each other in the bar or club existed in the SL to have a good time. Other than that, they create other version of themselves because they felt that they are different from what they actually are.

Limit. Limit is the only thing that is non-existence in the SL. Oh no, almost non-existence. Why? Because I know how it is like to be in that world.  I was in secondary school when i first sign up into the SL I thought i can go anywhere I want, so I did it. because it is free and I still can get the feeling like Im at home, so why not? I decided to go to Bora Bora Island (in Second Life) and chill around there, swimming by the beach and I decided to swim across the world, as deep as i can go. Guess what, my avatar cant's swim any further than the continental stage and that's it. I was full of imagination that i can explore the sea digitally but every single thing has it's own limit. Meeting people across the world while I was still in the virtual world made my eye opened wider at that time.

I still remember the time I started to interact with a user who used Japanese name as their alter-ego and mine was Lisa (If i'm not mistaken). Turns out i was interacting with an American guy who lived in New York and he was older than me. One more interaction that i still remember until now was I was in somewhere and I didnt know why i was there. Well I tried to find my purpose there so I tried to communicate to one avatar that somehow was there at the same time. I asked her (it was female avatar) about the place three times but she didnt reply me at all and I still remember how I was annoyed of her because she ignored me.

I asked her "Why are you so snobbish?". She replied "Mi no habla ingles ( I do not speak english)". That time i just got the idea that not everyone are using English to communicate in the virtual reality. The only thing I love being in the Second Life is I can go where ever I want without spending any money on flight tickets and visa.

Some people actually find some similarities in SL and Facebook, Twitter which they are mediums where people can interact with each other and create new community which based on their preference and ideologies. The issues that has been brought from the existence of SNS and virtual   3D world is how will the users who spend most of their time being in virtual reality than the reality itself and how will they adapt to the real world, real problems and of course real issues that is more serious, which are survival. In conclusion, we need to know that we cant forever live in virtual world as we are not belong there. Well at least not in this era.

  3. Hye Natasha thanks for sharing the information about Second Life. After reading your entry I feel like we're in a different world and can be second chance to anyone to be anyone in the virtual form. For me there are good and bad benefits of second life because the second life maybe can create the one who you want to be but we cannot depends on it.

  4. Wow..this reminds me of The Sims where players can build their own houses and live the lives they want. Personally I think that this kind of virtual world is quite a good place for people to escape from their hectic and stressful lives. We can even try things that we might not have the ability to fulfill in real life like living in a big house and driving our dream cars. However, before stepping into this kind of games, we should make sure that we are firm enough to know that it is totally different from the reality and make a clear line between these two world.

  5. in second life, one's image can be as perfect as one's wish as it can be edit according to their wish , i believe this actually can be a vital tool to improve one's disadvantage in the real world.

  6. Personally, I think virtual world brings both advantage and distadvantages. The Advantage is we can leave all the stress and unhappy incident behind and be in the virtual world where we can be ourselves according to our favours in terms of gender, personality and even lifestyle. On the other hand, Virtual world is still a virtual world, only reality is real. If one only can make friends in the virtual world, it would be difficult for him or her to gather the courage and approach someone in real life

  7. I agreed second life, or live in the virtual world can make we be someone that we want to be in real life but we cannot afford or we do not mean to be, but as a human being we must be thankful and accept the fate that been written for us. Live our life to the fullest and be a better person.
